Reading is great. Doing is better. So please grab a pencil and paper and actually write down the answers to these steps, or speak into your phone's voice recorder.

1. Imagine we are face to face. I ask you the most essential question, "So, what is your business?"

Answer in under 3 lines and/or 30 seconds.

 Great! You got this.

2. Wait. What about your customer?

Did you include anything that indicates who you serve and why they'd want what you’ve got?

If it does, congrats. Jump down to 3. If not, see if there's some way to work that in before you move on to...

3. OK, now read your statement out loud.

We get it, you've probably just been reading until now.

So say it. Out loud. Did it feel good to you? Does it roll off the tongue? Can you imagine delivering your "What is your business" line to anyone? Will they understand not just what you do, but why people would want to buy it?

Great.

4. OK, now would this person get it?

Will you have to pitch a 10 year old VC? Probably not. But assume your audience is thinking of something else at any given moment. Clarity counts.photo: Sharon McCutcheon

If he wouldn't get it, how can you change it?

Your business needs to be understandable to all kinds of people. Unless you are in a complex B2B business, your North Star explanation should be fairly universal and appealing. Then you can add richness and complexity. But your audience should get it no matter how distracted or not listening they may be.

5. OK, now does it work for this person?
